Opolis (http://www.opolis.eu) providing Secure Email Communication for Journalists

Today the Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times are running several articles about Yahoo Email accounts of several journalists having been hacked in China and Taiwan.

As a matter of fact, journalists sometimes undertake research on very sensitive topics, thereby often exchanging various documents and messages via Email, containing highly confidential information. It is absolutely essential to ensure that sensitive information between a journalist and an informant, but also in communicating with the editor´s office, can by no means be intercepted or interpreted by any unauthorized individuals. Needless to say that in some regions any leak can actually be very dangerous as well.

Also informants want to ensure that information and documents provided to a trusted journalist will be shared only on an as-needed basis. In essence, information shall only be accessible to the journalist or ? at best ? selected individuals around the journalist only, and should not be copied or forwarded to any third individuals. Even in case that this were allowed, the informant may want to know who the information has been shared with, and when and how.

Research processes of journalists sometimes require the transmission of very large documents, whereby standard Email applications ? leave alone that these are not secure ? do allow only limited volume transfer. And, journalists and informants would feel comfortable, if both could easily store all sensitive and confidential documents in encrypted mode with only authorized individuals having access.

Finally, any solution addressing these issues shall be affordable, easy to install and utmost user-friendly.

The Opolis Solution

Opolis Secure Mail and Document Messaging Service is a free, high-security Email and document messaging service (http://www.opolis.eu) and was launched in March 2010.

Opolis provides point-to-point Email security for corporate and private users. Opolis addresses concerns in regards to the current Email traffic architecture by transmitting and interim-storing messages and attached documents in encrypted mode only. On top, the sender has always full authority over what the recipient is allowed to do with a message and is empowered to monitor the path of a message.

Opolis operates on any PC in parallel to standard Email applications, such as Microsoft´s Outlook or Apple´s Mail. Opolis aims to empower the sender to optimally protect Emails and attachments:
? The sender decides what the recipient of a message is allowed to do with it. For example, the sender decides whether the recipient may copy, print, respond to or forward a message to another Opolis User or not ("I Decide").
? The sender is also able to monitor how the recipient has further processed the received message. - The path and status of each message sent can constantly be monitored live ("I Control").

Opolis also ensures that any message content or information related to the message flow cannot be manipulated or falsified. And, Opolis allows a basically unlimited volume transfer of files and documents.
